As a part of the series on foreign population report in South Korea, this article illustrates key facts which will help audicence see the population change in South Korea.


By region, all metropolitan areas except Seoul saw over a 7% increase in

foreign residents compared to last year.


The regions with the highest growth rates were:

  • Jeollanam-do (↑18.5%)

  • Gyeongsangnam-do (↑17.0%)

  • Ulsan (↑15.6%)

  • Chungcheongnam-do (↑14.4%)

  • Gangwon-do (↑14.3%)


In terms of absolute increase in population, the top regions were:


  • Gyeonggi-do (+58,294 people)

  • Gyeongsangnam-do (+21,942 people)

  • Chungcheongnam-do (+19,583 people)

  • Incheon (+13,974 people)

  • Gyeongsangbuk-do (+13,710 people)


The provinces and cities with the highest number of foreign residents are:

  • Gyeonggi-do: 809,801 people

  • Seoul: 449,014 people

  • Incheon: 168,590 people

  • Chungcheongnam-do: 155,589 people

  • Gyeongsangnam-do: 156,430 people

Together, 1,419,674 foreign residents, or 57.8% of the total, live in

the Seoul Capital Area (metropolitan region).


The top five cities/counties/districts with the largest foreign resident

populations are all located in Gyeonggi-do:

  • Ansan: 108,033 people

  • Hwaseong: 76,711 people

  • Siheung: 74,653 people

  • Suwon: 71,392 people

  • Bucheon: 58,632 people
