On December 21st, Jupiter and Saturn will be close to each other and people from Earth will be able to view this “Great Conjunction” with their own eyes in the night sky. It has been about 400 years since Jupiter and Saturn were very close to each other, and it has been about 800 years since Jupiter and Saturn aligned during the night. Jupiter and Saturn have different orbital periods, which brings them near each other every 20 years. But because their orbits have different inclinations, they don’t always overlap. 2020 is a special year because the conjunction that is going to happen on December 21st is a combination of both an overlap of the two planets and being very close in proximity.
How do we watch this event? The event will happen in the night sky in the Southwest direction, and it can be seen all around the world for a few days. In South Korea, you would be able to see the event in the night sky (if the weather is good enough), but to be able to discern between Jupiter and Saturn you would need binoculars or a telescope. Or, you could watch a livestream of the “Great Conjunction” in the National Gwacheon Science Museum Youtube channel or website. If you want to kind of see some of the moons of these planets, you would need to have an astronomical telescope.
Be sure not to miss out! This would literally be a once in a lifetime event that wouldn’t happen until another few centuries later.
목성과 토성, 400년만에 가장 가까워 지다!
2000년 12월 21일, 목성과 토성이 서로 가장 가까운 곳에 있게 되고, 지구에서 우리는 이 “목성과 토성의 대결합”을 지켜볼 수 있습니다. 목성과 토성이 이렇게 가까이 위치하게 되는 것은 400년만의 일이며 목성과 토성이 밤에 서로 나란히 모습을 나타내는 것을 800년만의 일입니다. 목성과 토성은 서로 다른 궤도 주기를 가지고 있어, 20년 간격으로 서로 가까워 집니다. 하지만 목성과 토성의 궤도 각도/기울기가 달라서 두 성이 서로 정확하게 합쳐져 보이는 일은 매우 드문 일입니다. 그런 의미에서 이 목성과 토성의 궤도가 거의 겹쳐 보일 정도로 서로 가까이 보이는 2020년 12월 21일의 “대결합”은 특별한 현상이라 할 수 있습니다.
그러면 어떻게 이 특별한 “대결합”은 볼 수 있을까요? 이 현상은 밤하늘 남서쪽 방향에서 발생할 것이고, 전 세계 어디에서나 몇 일간 지켜 볼 수 있을 것입니다. 한국에서도 날씨만 괜찮다면 이 “대결합”을 볼 수 있는데, 쌍안경이나 망원경으로 볼 수 있습니다. 이런 도구가 없는 분들은 과천국립과학관 유튜브 채널 또는 싸이트에서 볼 수 있습니다. 목성, 토성 주위의 달들까지 보고 싶은 분들은 천체 망원경이 꼭 필요합니다.
