With the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to persist, almost all schools in Korea have switched to online learning. This is a method of teaching where students listen to their teachers at home from an online website (i.e zoom or google meet).
Students claim that the advantages of online learning are that they are able to study wherever they want to, they do not need to worry about being infected, and that the environment is more comfortable, as they are at home. However, online learning also leads to lessened concentration as students are tempted to do off-task stuff such as SNS.
Although the Korean government was fast to adapt to the pandemic and introduce online learning, this was not the case for other countries. In countries where the government was not prepared for the pandemic, schools had to go through a temporary close. This is bringing up a lot of concern, claiming that all students are not having the same opportunities during the pandemic and that this temporary closure may lead to a permanent stop for millions of students all over the world. “During the coronavirus crisis, millions of children have been deprived of their right to education,” said Elin Martinez, senior researcher of the Children’s Rights Division of the Human Rights Watch. Now is the time to strengthen protection of the right to education by rebuilding a more equitable, robust, and quality education system.” It should be about fixing the institutional flaws that have prevented it from becoming a receiving space.”
In countries that are unprepared for the onslaught of the pandemic, the government should come up with measures to supply the population of students with equipment or access to the internet for a smooth learning experience for them. For countries that are already accustomed, students have to restrain themselves from going off-task and concentrate on their lectures like they are in school.
온라인 학습--학생들에게 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는가
코로나의 세계적 유행되는 시기, 한국은 가장 먼저 온라인 학습으로 전환을 했다. 온라인 학습이란 줌이나 구글 미트 등을 통해 선생님의 수업을 학생들이 듣는 방식을 말한다. 일부 학생들은 편히 수업을 집에서 듣거나 또 어디서나 들을 수 있기에 온라인 수업이 좋다는 의견을 말하기도 하지만, 많은 사람들을 온라인 학습이 학생들을 수업이 아닌 다른 미디어 특히 SNS활동들을 하게 하는 부작용이 크고 수업 집중도도 현장수업보다 많이 떨어진다고 비판한다
사실 더 큰 문제는 한국처럼 팬데믹 상황에서도 온라인 학습으로 전환할 수 있는 기술/시설(인터넷 보급)이 있는 나라가 아니다. 많은 나라들이 이런 온라인 기반 시설이 없기에 코로나가 심해지는 시기에 그저 학교를 닫는 조치를 했다. 이 상황은 전세계적으로 수백만명의 학생들이 교육을 받을 수 없는 위기 상황을 만들고 있다. Human Rights Wath의 아동인권 담당자인 엘린 마르티네즈는 “코로나 위기 상황에서 수백만명의 아이들이 교육받을 권리를 박탈당하고 있습니다. 바로 지금이 전세계적으로 더 평등하고 견고하면서도 질이 좋은 교육 시스템을 개발해야 할 때입니다”라고 말합니다.
전문가의 말대로 세계 각 정부는 학생들에게 온라인 학습을 할 수 있는 기본적인 수단/도구를 먼저 제공해야 합니다. 그리고 이미 이런 시설을 갖춘 나라들에서도 학생들이 온라인 수업에 더 집중할 수 있는 방법을 연구해 질병 대유행 상황에서도 교육은 계속되야 한다는 사실을 보여주어야 할 때입니다.
