On June 16, 2:50 p.m., the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, otherwise known as North Korea, destroyed the Kaesong Industrial Region’s Inter-Korean building on the orders of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong.
She stated that South Korean President Moon Jae-In allowed North Korean defectors to send balloons containing leaflets about the regime into North Korea, thus failing to keep the promises he made at the April 2018 Panmunjom summit. Since South Korea broke the promise, North Korea destroyed the complex to show that it was not needed anymore. This event lead to higher tensions between both Koreas.
The explosion was not controlled, as the building was not destroyed completely, and damage spread to nearby structures. Based on a review of a video released by the South Korean Ministry of National Defense (MND), a video from Korean Central Television (KCTV), and satellite imagery, it appears that the explosives were placed in a single location within the building.
Although satellite images show the building still standing, it is likely that it suffered massive damage, as the front of the building was blown up, and at least a portion of the roof collapsed. While the Korean Central News Agency reported that the building was “tragically ruined,” the North Korean newspaper “Rodon Sinmun” called the building an “eye-sore” and that it was “unnecessary and useless.”
북한 남북 연락사무소 폭파 사건

지난 6월 16일 오후 2:59분, 북한은 남북협력의 상징이었던 남북 연락사무소를 폭파했습니다. 이런 일방적인 폭파는 북한 최고 지도자인 김정은의 동생인 김여정인 지시한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
김여정은 대한민국 문재인 대통령이 탈북 단체들이 북한을 비판하는 전단(대북전단)을 계속해서 북한으로 보내는 것을 허용하고 있다고, 이런 행동은 2018년 남북이 동의한 판문점 정상 회담의 정신을 어기는 것이라고 비난했습니다. 김여정은 대북전단을 보내는 것은 남한이 먼저 북한과의 약속을 어긴 것이기에, 남북 평화 회담의 상징인 남북 연락 사무소를 폭파하는 것이라고 했습니다. 이러한 북한의 행동은 한반도 긴장을 더 높이고 있습니다.
연락사무소 폭파는 완벽하게 진행된 건 아닌 것으로 보입니다. 연락사무소 건물이 완전히 파괴되지 않았고, 폭파될 때 생긴 충격/여파도 건물과 가까운 곳에도 영향을 준 것으로 보입니다. 국방부에서 공개한 영상과 위성사진을 통해 보면, 건물 내 한 지점에서 폭파가 일어난 것으로 보입니다. 위성사진으로 보면 연락사무소 건물은 아직 서 있는 모습이지만, 건물 앞부분/지붕이 날아 갈 정도의 큰 피해를 입은 것으로 보입니다. 북한노동신문은 이 건물을 “눈에 거슬리는 쓸모 없는 건물”이라 표현했고 북한중앙방송은 “비극적으로 파괴되었다”고 보도했습니다.
